What an experience it was to perform The Rite of Spring again with the West London Sinfonia. This feels less like a created work and more like an inherent quality of the universe. Paired with Glazunov’s The Seasons – not much more than a decade between them but worlds apart!
I feel so proud of the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra after our titanic performance of Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony. To play this piece at all takes enormous skill and stamina but to project so forcefully its shocking narrative requires great reserves of mental and spiritual strength. Viv McLean’s Rach 2 beforehand was lush and brilliant.
Just back from an extraordinary few days in Moscow with the Yuri Bashmet Orchestra recording the music for the London Children’s Ballet’s new one-act version of The Secret Garden. Artem Vassiliev’s music is, as always, wonderful. Performances were on May 30th and 31st at the Lyric, Hammersmith. Huge success.
Had a wonderful evening of music making with the London International Orchestra. A concert in memory of Alfie, son of Prof. Hannah Cock, and in aid of the Shooting Star Chase Childen’s Hospice. Largely of lollipops but also Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. This is an extraordinary bunch of musicians including some real legends of the profession whose names I’ve known since I started in the business.
